FAQ

What is SUP?
Stand Up Paddle boarding, or SUP, is a water sport in which the paddler stands on a board resembling a surf board and uses a lightweight paddle to propel, turn, and glide over the surface of the water. The SUP boards are longer, thicker, and wider than a typical surf board, giving it more volume, buoyancy, and stability. The sport can be enjoyed in the ocean, surfing, or in any calm body of water.

If I have never done SUP before, is this for me?
Our SUP lessons are tailored to beginners. The boards are very stable and most of the water conditions we have here in the Columbus area are calm, making it the exception that you would fall in the water even during your first experience. The SUP experience can be anything you want it to be… you can paddle hard and fast for a great total body workout or you can leisurely paddle while taking in the sights of nature and having fun with friends.

Where will my lesson/tour take place?
We offer SUP lessons at a variety of Central Ohio locations including Alum Creek, Hoover Reservoir, and O’Shaughnessy Reservoir. Specific launch area information is available on the registration pages.

How long is a lesson?
Your first time paddling with us you must take the beginner paddler course, even if you have prior experience. This starts with a 15 minute land based tutorial to teach you how to launch your board, get into a standing position, and basic paddle technique. Once everyone is in the water there will be 1-2 instructors on the water with you to provide on water coaching for about 30 minutes. Then you will have time to paddle around on your own. The whole experience is 90-minutes.

What age range are your students?
We have students of all ages! We offer private lessons for ages 6 and up. Ages 12 and up are welcome to join in the group classes. As long as you are in good health, there is no maximum age to SUP.

Do you provide all the equipment?
All equipment is provided. The Stand Up Paddle boards and paddles that we use are of the highest quality and are most conducive to safe learning and a productive SUP experience. We also provide each student with a life jacket, board leash, and safety whistle.

What do I need to bring/wear?
We recommend bringing a small beach bag with the essentials; sunscreen, water bottle, and a towel. Other than that, you can just wear your bathing suit/ board shorts. Most people stand barefoot on the board so wear shoes that you can easily slip off when you launch your board.

Do I have to wear a life jacket?
Yes. Per Ohio Revised Code 1547.52 you must have a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) on the vessel. Per SUP Columbus company policy, you must be physically wearing the PFD. We will provide PFDs but you are always welcome to bring your own if you prefer.

What happens if conditions are unfavorable for SUP on a particular day?
We will still paddle in a light misting rain. Classes will be cancelled for heavy rain, thunderstorms and /or high winds.

If we have to cancel due to weather we will attempt to reschedule you at your convenience before the end of the season. If we cannot reschedule you we will offer a refund.

What sort of payment do you accept?
We accept credit or debit cards. We cannot accept any payment on the property where the lesson occurs, all registration must be done online. Therefore we cannot accept cash or checks. Your credit card will not be run until the lesson is completed.

Do you do parties, events, youth groups etc?
Yes, we love to! It is a great way to get kids involved in a fun sport and outdoors! Also, it is a wonderful team building experience for work parties.

No Shows:
There is no refund or re-scheduling for no-show lessons.
